INTERMEDIATE BAND
Intermediate Band is conducted by Mr Anthony Marsden. These students are in their second year of playing their instrument and are in Years 4-6.

I am absolutely blown away by how much this group of young musicians has grown musically over the last year. Despite the challenges of the on again/off again rehearsals and the Zoom sectionals, we've been able to push onwards and upwards into some very demanding repertoire that has taken their musicality as an ensemble to the next level.
It's a shame we didn't get to spend a whole year together in the band room as I've had so much fun with them, by the end of the year they were really sizzling (the ending of one of their pieces gave me goosebumps in our last rehearsal......just ask them!). For this performance, IB are presenting 8 pieces for listening pleasure, spanning from hymns and chorales to marches to pop music and even some 60's Surf Rock thrown in!
I'm truly excited to see them graduate to Concert Band next year with Megan, where they will no doubt take the next step in their musical journeys. I can't wait to listen to you all perform as the 2021 Concert Band sometime next year!

Nearer My God To Thee - by Lowell Mason arr A.Marsden
A simple yet elegant hymn tune, enabling a band to enjoy playing slowly and listen to the various voices and harmonies present within the work. This is our go-to warmup piece to get us all thinking the same and listening to one another within the ensemble.
No Bears Allowed - by Brian West
A catchy piece with a solid drum beat driving all the way to the end, No Bears Allowed is a musical tribute to the storybook/chant "We're Going on a Bear Hunt" by Michael Rosen.
Wipeout - by The Surfaris arr. Michael Sweeney
Some 60's Surf Rock featuring Samara on the drum kit as she lays down some awesome rhythms along with some punchy hits by the rest of the band....cooool duuude!
Heavy Metal - by Scott Watson
This piece showcases all the big and beefy sounding instruments in the band. Baritones, euphonium, trombones, tubas, and tenor saxes all get the catchy "hook" throughout the whole piece, accompanied by a driving rock beat and some great hits at the end!
Nighthawk - by James Swearingen
A piece in two parts, an ominous drum beat opens to a mysterious woodwind melody, before going completely tribal featuring some amazing drumming from Anthony combined with a powerful melody from the trumpets.
Fighting Falcon March - by Todd Stalter
Imagine a squadron of fighter jets and you've got the inspiration for this piece. A great piece for introducing the march style to young players...and one of IB's favourites to play at the end of a rehearsal.
Lightning- by Todd Stalter
Our major work for the year, this piece has tested the individual ability of IB more than any other piece. This electrifying work was inspired by the awesome display of beauty and raw energy from a powerful thunderstorm. The aggressive parts of this composition portray the level of energy present in the storm, while the slow interior section provides an opportunity for both listeners and performers to enjoy a calmer moment.
Happy - by Pharrell Williams arr Michael Sweeney
An upbeat song made popular in the movie Despicable Me 2, but since then has grown in popularity in the charts and on the internet as well. A feel good tune that immediately lifts your spirits, enjoy!
