CONCERT BAND

This senior group combines 3rd and 4th year players together, to further extend and build on the outstanding musical foundations that we develop in the LPS Band program.

Under this year's abnormal circumstances, this group of truly amazing individuals has experienced around half the number of face-to-face rehearsals for a typical year.  While CB's virtual rehearsals were ultimately hugely successful and demonstrated a myriad of new and unexpected ways for these students to grow - and indeed impress! - nothing can quite replace the experience of making music with others in person...

Despite being separated online for so much of this year, and then being so spread out in the hall that the delay made it nearly impossible to play in time with each other, this year's Concert Band have managed to produce one of the most outstanding Music Spectacular programs in the history of the program.

We are thrilled to present a whopping SEVEN pieces of music, spanning as many musical genres, with some of the pieces also being medleys (which is really like 3 or 4 songs in 1).  This is a huge body of work to produce in any year, but particularly this year, and I am so proud of the whole team for persevering, and bringing these musical artworks to life.  What a treat that we will now have these on record forever... one of the silver linings of this tough year!

Ordinarily, the experience of our program for year 6s would be filled with super special opportunities, privileges, and celebrations. I am sad that we haven't been able to provide the usual full experience to this year's graduating group, but I thank and congratulate them all for completing their four years in the LPS band program with such maturity, patience, and grace, and I believe they will all truly impress as they move on to play in their high school music programs and beyond, and indeed in any and all of their future pursuits.

For 2021, our program will be lead by this year's year 5s, who have proven themselves to be so resilient and spirited!  Our band program is in wonderful hands with this special class of 2021, and I look forward to seeing you all thrive as the seniors next year!

We proudly present the following varied and exciting pieces of music.  A musical celebration of overcoming the unique challenges of 2020, and of all four years of dedication and outstanding performances by our graduating class of 2020.  Bravo!!!

Blazing Bones of the West, Overture  - arranged by Michael Story

Yee haw! Our overture for this year's Spectacular is from a medley of Western-inspired hits. 'The Magnificent Seven' theme is featured here (you might also recognise it from the ad campaign of one of Australia's favourite cold brews...), along with some stellar solos from our trombone section - and some cracking 'whips'!

The Simpsons - by Danny Elfman

One of the most comedic and expressive tv/movie themes ever written!  We had a blast bringing this together (even over zoom!). Listen out for Marge's honking horn, and Lisa's rebellious saxophone solo (supported this time by our amazing trumpets!).

Haunted -  by Adrian Hallam

Boo! A medley of spooky sounds in this exciting and theatrical piece written by amazing living Australian composer, and friend, Adrian Hallam.  Creep through a haunted house, float through a graveyard, be chased by zombies, feel shivers from a blood-curdling scream, and, at the end, imagine some large red velvet curtains closing on these spooky cinematic scenes.

I'll Be There - arranged by Johnnie Vinson

A stunning arrangement of this feel-good soul song by the amazing Jackson 5.  A favourite of ours this year!

Silent Movie - by Brian West

One of our first challenges of the year, with super fast notes under our fingers!  Inspired by the silent movie era (such as The Keystone Cops and Charlie Chaplin), this music portrays all the wonderful slapstick action of the genre - lots of running around, chaotic action, a villian, and maiden in distress tied to the train tracks... choo choooo!

March in F -  by Beethoven

One of the biggest technical, musical, and stamina challenges of our year!  This is a very clever and beautiful March by Beethoven, with very interesting phrasing, lots of dynamics, and joyous solos from the clarinets and flutes.  This performance demonstrates a maturity and musicality that far exceeds expectations of a group of this age and experience. Bravo CB!

Queen in Concert - arranged by Jay Bocook

A massive four-in-one medley of some of the worlds most loved hits by Queen.

This has almost been a year-round project for us, as it offers so many challenges it kept us incredibly busy!  Hear all the highs, lows, and rocking drama of Queen's music brought to life by these young musicians.

Everyone did a stellar job rocking out in this epic, and special mentions go to Jasmine and Isabel who carried the Alto Sax solos, and to our own Freddie 'Mercury' on drum kit - a particularly big responsibility in this one!
